Why does my trailer bounce when empty?

Understanding Trailer Bouncing: Causes and Solutions

Bouncing When Empty — This Is Normal

All trailers bounce to some degree when towed empty. Futura trailers use torsion axle suspension, which is tuned to perform best under load. Without the weight of a vehicle on the deck, the suspension can't dampen road vibrations effectively.

This is not a fault — it's how torsion suspension works.

To reduce empty bounce:

  • Check tire pressure before every trip. Inflate to the PSI shown on the tire sidewall or in your owner's manual. An under-inflated tire will make bouncing worse.
  • Slow down. Bouncing increases with speed, particularly on rough or uneven roads.
  • Ensure your hitch height is set so the trailer tows level. An unlevel trailer shifts weight off one axle and amplifies bounce.

Bouncing When Loaded — Check These

If your trailer bounces with a vehicle loaded, something else is going on. Work through this list:

  1. Tire pressure — confirm all tires are inflated to the recommended PSI. Under-inflation is the most common cause.
  2. Weight distribution — the vehicle may need to be repositioned on the deck. Tongue weight should be 10–15% of the total loaded trailer weight. If the load is too far back, the trailer will bounce and may sway.
  3. Overloaded — if you're exceeding the trailer's rated capacity, the suspension will bottom out and bounce. Check your trailer's weight plate on the drawbar/tongue.
  4. Hitch height — the trailer must tow level. If the rear of the trailer sits lower than the front (or vice versa), one axle carries more load than the other, causing uneven bounce.
  5. Tow vehicle shocks — worn shocks on your tow vehicle can transfer bounce to the trailer. If the bouncing continues after hitting a bump, the tow vehicle suspension is likely the issue.
  6. Damaged axle or suspension — if you've hit a pothole or curb, inspect the axles and torsion arms for visible damage. A bent torsion arm will cause persistent bounce on one side.
